Feeling Frosty?

Recently everyone has been raving about Percy Jackson and how incredible those books are. It has regained popularity thanks to the TV Show on Disney +. I’m also a lover of Percy Jackson and the book series is great but LONG when you jump into the full depth of Rick Riordan and his writing and the interconnected stories that he has published. The books are young adult and they follow a growing up timeline and the books mature as the characters mature (very Harry Potterish). If you’re looking for something along those lines but is a bit more mature then you don’t have to look any farther than Mythos Academy by Jennifer Estep.

Mythos Academy by Jennifer Estep is considered to be a young adult fantasy series with six books. I will warn that though the series is considered to be YA it is definitly for those who are more on the mature end of the YA reading section. There are some trigger warnings through the series; such as, sex, violence, cussing, allusions to molestation, etc. Most of the trigger warnings are alluding to these items but none of it is explicitly written for the readers, it’s more of a knowing what the author is talking about with what she writes. This is a book series that I as a mother didn’t let my son touch until he was a seventh grader, he’s always been advanced and read above his level he actually completed the Percy Jackson books when he was in fourth grade.

The series starts off with Touch of Frost and focuses on the main characeter Gwen Frost who is a gyspy. She has been sent to Mythos Academy by her grandmother to be able to control her gift of psychometry. Gwen is a bit of a loner and doesn’t particulary like anyone at Mythos Academy or really believe what she is being taught. Mythos Academy is a school for warriors from all mythologies like valkryies, spartans, celts, vikings, amazons, bogatyrs and even more. The point of the school is to train these young warriors to become leaders in the war against The Reapers of Chaos who are all followers of Loki and want to bring about the end of the world. Gwen is just going through the motions at school when a student is murdered on campus and Gwen is the one who finds the body. Deciding that she’s Nancy Drew or something Gwen investigates the murder and makes a few close friends along the way. She also discovers more about her own gift and why her grandma insisted that she go to Mythos Academy.
